5 Step Guide to Get Started

This guide is your quick and friendly roadmap to getting started with Gistr, making your journey simple, and interesting!

Gistr lets you highlight, annotate, and curate content based on Youtube videos to uncover valuable insights effortlessly. Whether you're learning something new or sharing your discoveries, Gistr makes it easy to learn, save and share knowledge with others.

⚠️ We currently support only videos with transcripts in the English language.

In this guide, we’ll start by familiarizing you with key terminology, and then dive into the exciting process of creating your first thread.

If you like to watch video well you will find it in the end but if you are reader like me well go ahead than.

Terminology Overview

  1. Clips: Clip or Highlight key parts of a video that you find is worth storing and sharing.

  2. Thread: A document containing a YouTube video, clips, and your personal notes.

  3. Collections: A folder to store and organize multiple threads together around a specific topic. For example, you could create a collection for 'Design Tutorials' or 'Motivational Talks.'

  4. Ghost Highlight: An AI-powered feature that automatically identifies and highlights key clips from a video, saving you time and effort.

Let’s dive into the walkthrough!

Step 1: Creating your first thread

  1. Choose a YouTube video URL you love (or from your Watch Later list), paste it into the homepage input box, or click the top-left 'Create' button and select 'New Thread' to begin!

  2. It may take a few seconds to load your thread page as the transcript and AI summary process. Once ready, your screen will split into two sections:

    • The left panel serves as your text editor, allowing you to capture notes, use the 'Ask AI' feature, or view all your clips in sequence.

    • On the other hand the right panel shows the YouTube video, seekbar, transcript and chapters.

    • ⭐ FYI:

      • Seekbar: Clip and store all clips as you watch.

      • Clip button: Create clip with a single click.

      • Video transcription & chapters: Analyze video content and easily navigate.

Step 2: How to create your first clip

Auto Clipping:

  1. Click on 'Ask AI' on the bottom of the editor panel.

  2. Click on the first option "Highlight the best clips" and wait for a few seconds for AI to curate the best parts of the video for you.

  3. Boom!! you can see all the best parts of the video in the fraction of seconds. Scroll down and click on 'Add to Notes' to create the clips.

  4. Note: Auto Clipping will not be supported for non-transcript, non-English videos.

Manual Clipping:

  1. Use clip button:

    1. Click on 'Clip' Button when you feel it's the right time to clip. Click on 'Save Clip' when you feel your clip is ready.

  2. Drag on seekbar to clip:

    1. Hover over the seekbar to find the timestamp you want to clip. Once selected, drag your mouse pointer left or right to adjust the duration. Release the mouse when your clip is just right.

    2. You can adjust the clip by dragging the start and end markers to fine-tune your clip.

    3. Click on the 'Save Clip' button once you are ready.

Add a splash of color to your clip (Optional):

  • Before saving, click the color icon on the right side of the toolbar to choose a highlight color that suits your style.

Edit or delete your clip:

  • To edit a saved clip, click on it directly in the seekbar or go to the left editor panel, click the three-dot menu next to the clip, and select 'Edit Start and End Time' to make adjustments anytime.

Step 3: Leverage AI for assistance

  • Inline AI

    Hover over a clip, click the '+' icon that appears, and select the 'Ask AI' button to interact with AI directly on the clip. Type your question or choose from suggested prompts. Gain valuable insights about the clip right where you are.

  • Ask AI Panel:
    Always accessible at the bottom of the editor, this feature lets you ask questions directly about the video. You can choose from suggested prompts, use smart questions, or type your own queries for deeper insights.

You can add the AI output to your notes by scrolling down and clicking on 'Add to Notes' and reflect your own thoughts on it.

Step 4: Adding Notes

  1. Notes:

    • Click anywhere outside the clip on the editor to write notes.

  2. Notes on Clip:

    • Add your thoughts as a child note on the clips that you have created.

Pro Tip:

  • Use the / key to access advanced writing options.

Step 5: Share your work:

  1. Share clips:

    1. Click the three-dot menu next to the clip, and select 'Share' to share the clip.

  2. Share threads:

    1. Click on the 'Share' button on the top of the left panel to share the thread.
